. Governor Mark Dayton has appointed Anne Krafthefer, Lester Park Elementary, to the Minnesota Board of Teaching. Anne teaches fifth grade and has been with ISD 709 since 1991. She joins other teachers, administrators and members of the public who will work to ensure the state has qualified and professional teachers.
. Cassie Mahlburg, Denfeld High School, was selected for the 2013 Boys & Girls Club Youth of the Year Award. She will go on to compete with other youth on the state and national level. Jordan McMillian, also from Denfeld, was a finalist for this local award.
. Kirsi Kuutti, captain of the Duluth East Daredevils Robotics Team, is a recipient of the Minnesota Aspirations for Women in Computing Award for High School Students. The award was presented by Advance IT Minnesota. Winners were selected based on their interests, accomplishments, and community involvement in computing and technology, as well as for their aspirations in computing and technology-related fields. Kirsi was featured on WDSE-TV8′s Almanac North.
. Tim Renier, East High School, won first place at the State Science & Engineering Fair. His project is The Effects of a Multi-Factor Hand Hygiene Intervention with Motivational Interviewing on Hand Washing Effectiveness. Tim will travel to Phoenix, AZ in May for an all expense paid trip to the Intel ISEF (International Science and Engineering Fair).
. The Duluth-Superior Symphony Young Artists 2013 competition included three winners from ISD 709. Abby Ham, Duluth East HS, took second place, Alia Gribbon, Denfeld HS, took third place; and Nikki Hill, Denfeld HS, won the Hester scholarship that was open to all Youth Orchestra students.
. Tara Williams, Julie Ostazeski and Megan Rudd, Denfeld High School, will represent ISD 709 in the 2013 State Music Listening Competition at Augsburg College in Minneapolis. The Music Listening Contest is sponsored by Minnesota Public Radio and is the Knowledge Bowl of Music.
