A photograph that captures the sensation of the infinite and the eternal felt near Lake Superior — while showing our small, hopeful presence beside it — earned Mary Amerman of Duluth the Grand Prize in the 18th annual Lake Superior Photo Contest, announced in the current February/March issue of Lake Superior Magazine.

LSM-FebMarch13-coverThe issue is available from the publisher and on newsstands. In it are 26 photos that earned either prizes or honorable mentions.

Mary made her photo on the water-smoothed rocks of Duluth’s Brighton Beach. She will get a $200 prize, a one-year subscription to Lake Superior Magazine, a 2013 Lake Superior wall calendar and a Lake Superior note card set.

It was one of 1,284 images entered into the contest from photographers in 138 different cities, in 18 states, one U.S. territory (Guam) and Canada.

“I work with Lake Superior images almost every day of the year, and yet the photo contest entries continue to amaze me – incredible images,” says magazine Editor Konnie LeMay.

This year’s contest featured a new category, Artsy/ Altered, in addition to the three traditional categories of Lake/Landscape, Nature, and People/Humor. Top prize winners included:

. Lake/Landscape – First Place & Cover to Michigan’s Crisp Point Lighthouse by Bruce Multhup of Springfield, Ohio; Second Place to the skeletal remains of a ship wrecked in Sturgeon Bay by Jakub Sisak of Thunder Bay, Ontario.

. Nature – First Place to bees atop a vibrant sunflower in Ishpeming, Michigan, by Liz Powelson of Ishpeming, and Second Place to an intimate moment between a doe and her fawn on Mission Island by Karen Ramsdale of Thunder Bay, Ontario.

The cover winner also takes home $150. Winners and honorable mention awards are featured in the February/March issue of the magazine.
