The Northern Exposure Hockey Tournament will kick off its 8th annual weekend this Friday, featuring 55 hockey teams with players ages ranging from 10-18. The three-day event will add an estimated $750,000 into Duluth’s economy.
“We are proud to welcome over 1,100 players, their coaches and families to Duluth for a weekend filled with competitive hockey and fun at many of our city’s finest attractions,” said tournament director Kasey Yoder. “The fact that 36 teams are returning this year speaks volumes for not only the tournament, but also of our sponsors and the city as a whole.”
The prestigious summer tournament features teams from Arizona, Michigan, Nebraska, North Dakota, Wisconsin, Canada and eight teams from Duluth. Many teams stay in Duluth for up to a week on either side of the tournament. The tourney is sponsored by Blackwoods Grill and Bar, Perkins, Grandma’s Restaurants, Sammy’s Pizza, the Edgewater Resort and Waterpark, Stewarts, Stauber Brothers, Play It Again Sports and 2nd Life Sticks.
Games will run from Friday to Sunday at Mars Lakeview Arena, Duluth Heritage Sports Center, Hermantown Arena, Superior Amateur Hockey Association (SAHA) Arena, Cloquet Area Recreation Center Arena, and the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) Campus Arena.
“This tournament brings together some of the finest competition from throughout the country and Canada,” said Yoder. “They relish the opportunity to come to a town where hockey is king, measure themselves against many of the top teams across the country, as well as the best from Duluth.”
