The number of incoming Bulldogs softball freshmen expanded to seven last Thursday with the addition of Duluth Denfeld standout Melissa Jarvi.

Jarvi started four years at shortstop and second base for the Denfeld and Duluth Central High School (which closed in 2011). This past spring she carved out a spot for herself on the Lake Superior Conference, the Section 7AAA and the Duluth News-Tribune’s All-Area teams after driving in a team-high 17 runs and helping lead the Hunters to a 16-3 overall record. A .395 lifetime hitter, Jarvi also made quite the splash in the classroom as a prep, compiling a perfect 4.00 grade point average.

The rest of the Bulldogs’ recruiting class for 2013-14 includes Angel Dahl of Cherry, Minn. (Cherry High School), pitcher Sam Hartman of Maple Plain, Minn. (Orono H.S.), outfielder Hailey Lundquist of Hastings, Minn. (Hastings H.S.), infielder Kylie Pewe of Siren, Wis. (Grantsburg H.S.), pitcher/utility player Mariah Schultz of Lewiston, Minn. (Martin Luther H.S.), and infielder Heather Woyak of Stevens Point (Stevens Point Area H.S.).

UMD went 41-13 overall in 2013 and captured a share of its first Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference title since 2003 with a 19-5 record. Those 19 conference victories were the most in program history.
